A Practical Learning Toolkit for Developing Your Meat Business

Introduction

Small Meat Producers across Europe are struggling to survive for a variety of reasons. However, lack of demand for their output is not one of them!  They play a key role in the European meat supply chain, yet the vast majority face profit & competitiveness decline resulting in loss of income, jobs and quality of life.   This decline is partly due to external factors, but given the ongoing growth in the meat sector and in consumer preferences for local food, we believe that internal obstacles –a short term, operational focus combined with lack of innovation & marketing skills – are limiting local abattoir growth.

The impact of legislative change in agri-food industry added to numerous consumer scares, have meant that existing accredited Vocation Education Training courses focus on food science, technology, hygiene and compliance.   Existing business development training is perceived as too generic, too overwhelming or too costly in terms of time and money for rural SMEs. There is little or no specific training on innovation or marketing for the meat sector which is accessible to them.  This EU Leonardo da Vinci Lifelong Learning programme seeks to address these issues:-
