5.5 Case Study – Finland

Food Logistics – Providing Local Food Through Transport and Distribution Networking

The project aimed at finding cost-efficiency on the transport and distribution mechanisms of local food: from the Southern Finnish food producers to capital Helsinki markets and restaurants. The company logistics strategies were individually studied in some 30 food producing companies. As a result two new networks were created: 1) e-shopping & logistics network, where customer demand is collected in bigger quantities and only then transported, 2) network of company-specific logistics solutions, e.g. related with storage. The project also created an energy efficiency scoring system, helping customers to compare the logistics impact on food processing and its ecological foodprint
